“Who Sharded?…it was me.”
.
Framed Ceramic Shards.
.
A collection of shards from past works, successful and unsuccessful pieces, fired in many different kilns in pursuit of playing with new ideas.

You are who you are because of your mistakes. Clay often illustrates an opportunity to learn from mistakes and improve. I have been working to refine my ability to be myself in my ceramic artwork, and not produce objects, but to connect deeper and create art. My time as an apprentice I made “objects” and I work to push away from that mentality of working with clay. This piece represents how many ideas are always flowing in my head, and I can only hold to so many before the ideas spill over the sides.
.
What I took away most from my apprenticeship is that I don’t want to fill orders. I want to make art and create a community of artists that feel the same way. Iowa City feels more like a community I can be a part of. Floyd Virginia has a lot of artists, but isn’t a community that supports the artists that live within it.
